COPPERAS COVE - The Lamar Bearcat 7th Grade A football team earned their first victory of the season with a 28-7 win over Copperas Cove Junior High on Monday evening.
Copperas Cove struck first with a quarterback scramble and run for the first score of the game going up 7-0. Lamar answers on kickoff return with a 30 yard run by Aakeem Abddeen putting Lamar on their own 30-yard line. Di'shann Overton and Liam Inzunza connect for a 15-yard completion and end up on the 10-yard line. A 2 yard run for a touchdown by Aakeem Abddeen followed and a 1 pt run conversion followed by Di'shann Overton putting the game at 7-7 going to second quarter.
In the second quarter, Di'shann Overton on defense strips a fumble from Cove's WR forcing a turnover. Some good drives by Lamar second half, but three flags for holding cost potential scores and go into half 7-7.
On the second play of the third quarter, Di'shann Overton scrambled for 55-yard run for a touchdown untouched and put Lamar up 13-7. One point converted by Aakeem Abddeen pushes Lamar up 14 to 7. Lamar comes out with an onside kick and recovered by DK Ross. Di'shann Overton passes to Rogelio Flores for a 19-yard touchdown to pull Lamar up 20-7. 1pt conversion by Aakeem Abddeen put Lamar up 21-7 late 3rd qtr.
In the fourth, Di'shann Overton makes another defensive play with an interception returning for 20 yards getting a defensive stop for Lamar. Di'shann Overton finds, Zai Fierce, wide open for 35yard touchdown. One point conversion completed by Aakeem Abddeen making the score 28-7 late 4th qtr. Armani Velasquez, with the "big hit award" forced a fumble and recovered by Jordan Naylor, sealing the game. Dominant defense second half by the Bearcats, not allowing another score 2nd half.
Offensive Player of the games, Di'shann Overton 3tds, 4-4 100 yards 2 passing 1 rushing and Aakeem Abddeen 11-60 rushing 1 td. Defensive player of the game was Di'shann Overton, 1 interception and 1 forced fumble.
Lamar (1-1) on the season will return to play September 23 when they will host Midway Middle School at Woodson Field beginning at 6:15.
