The Lamar Bearcats hosted Copperas Cove Junior High at Woodson Field on Tuesday night and came away with a 40-27 victory over the Bullpups.
On the first possession of the game for Lamar, Mehki Austin finds Cederius Mathis for a 60 yard pass for touchdown. Extra point try was no good as Lamar strikes first going up 6 to 0. On the ensuing kick off, Lamar attempted an onside kick and recovered the ball on own 40 yard line. Cederius Mathis runs for a big gain for 35 yards to put Lamar in striking distance at the 30 yard line. facing a fourth down, Lamar was able to convert on a fourth and long with a big run by Mehki Austin setting up the Bearcats at the
2 yard line. The Bearcat offense and Cruz Martinez finished the drive with a tough 2 yard run for a touchdown putting Lamar up 13-0. Following a 1-point conversion, Lamar was up 14-0 in the first quarter.
The Bearcat defense comes out huge stopping Coves running game, Jacob Reyes forces a fumble and Zyaire Flowers recovers giving the Bearcats the possession. Next play Mekhi Austin finds Cederius Mathis up the sideline for a huge 40 yard pass. Mekhi Austin finished the drive off with a 2 yard run set up by his offensive line with a great push and Sergio Zarate-Garcia kicks the extra point for two making the score of 22-0 2nd quarter.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Bearcats had a mishap and Cove returned the kickoff for a touchdown. extra point no good. However, the Bearcats would respond with a minute left in the 2nd quarter as Mehki Austin finds Zyaire Flowers who jumps over two Cove defenders and races down the sideline for a 70 yd touchdown. Extra point was no good Bearcats 28-6.
Coming out the half Cove drives down the field, a mishap with substitution and Cove catches the Bearcats without a defender for a wide open 5 yard touchdown. Extra point was blocked, 28-12 mid 3rd quarter. On the ensuing possession, the Bearcats get a big run from, JJ Jackson, for 30 yards into Cove territory. On a fumbled snap Mehki Austin picks the ball off the ground and runs in his second rushing touchdown from the six yard line. The extra point kick was blocked making the score 34 to 12. Cove puts together a good drive downfield and next possession and answers the Bearcat score with a quarterback scramble from the 15 yd line for a score converting the extra point as well making the score 34-20.
The Bearcats capped off the scoring in the fourth when Mehki Austin rips up the side line for a 43 yard touchdown. Extra point good as well by Austin putting Lamar up 40-20 late 4th quarter. Cove scores late making the final 40-27 Bearcats win.
The Offensive Players of the Games was Zyaire Flowers with 70 yds receiving 1 TD, Cederius Mathis 43 yards rushing, 103 receiving 1 TD, and Captain Mehki Austin with 5 TDs, 87 yds rushing and 178 passing.
Defensive Players of the games were the entire Bearcat Defense with the “Big Hit Award” going too Cederius Mathis.
Lamar returns to action on September 24th with a road game at Midway.
